The Kings to Babylon Captivity

Chapter 5

Saul anointed as King - CY 2924*

Creation Year: 2924* Western Year: 1053* BC

Note: this is just a mention of activities and not intended to be attributed to this year. Scripture only mentions this event and not the time-frame. Even Sir Isaac Newton attributes only ten years to Saul's reign. The Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended, Sir Isaac Newton, London, MDCCXXVIII)

At some time, Saul is anointed King, and then later becomes king, the Kingdom is taken away, and given to David, who is anointed, but not made King for a while. Like Saul, no dates are given in scripture.

Now I know of Acts 13:21, but remember Samuel's time is included and because of the ark being in Kirjathjearim for 20 years from Eli's death to David's reign, well that doesn't leave enough time for 40 years to pass to be attributed to Saul. In fact one Jewish site stated that Saul reigned only 2 years. The fact is, scripture doesn't say. Furthermore, since Josephus isn't scripture, he's not perfect, and is often wrong when dealing with numbers. I believe this is because even at his time he was influenced by the errors of Claudious Ptolomey.

I believe this because of the verse before it (Acts 13:20) states that the 450 years were "until Samuel," meaning that Samuel's years were not included in with the time of the Judges. I believe that the 40 years is attributed to Samuel, which overlaps Eli and Saul and David. I know that it's a stretch but Scripture is without error and to give Saul 40 years reign contradicts I Samuel 7:2 and I Chronicles 13:5-6 which shows that from the death of Eli to David's first year of reign were only 20 years, I Samuel 7:2, I Chronicles 13:5-6.

David made king over Judah and gets the ark - CY 2934

Creation Year: 2934  Western Year: 1043 BC

Samuel dies, Saul dies, David made king over Judah at 30 years old, Ishbosheth is made king over Israel at 40, II Samuel 2:4, II Samuel 2:8-10. David gets the ark out of Kirjathjearim, I Chronicles 13:5-6.

Ishbosheth murdered, David is made king of Israel  - CY 2941

Creation Year: 2941  Western Year: 1036 BC

Ishbosheth is murdered and David is made King over Israel also and ruled 33 more years, II Samuel 5:1-5.

David dies, Solomon made king  - CY 2975

Creation Year: 2975  Western Year: 1003 BC

David dies and Solomon reigns in his stead. This year is count as the first year of Solomon. David's 40th year ended in CY 2974. Since we do not know the month, we are limited to splitting by years instead of by the actual months, I Kings 2:12. This year is the "about" 530 years from the Exodus per the summary of Paul in Acts 13:18. The Exodus was in Creation Year 2453 to David's death in this year, Creation Year 2975, is 522 years.

The years of "about forty years" (Acts 13:18), "about the space of four hundred and fifty years" (Acts 13:20) and "by the space of forty years" (Acts 13:21) add up to "about" 530 years. Two "abouts" with eight years difference.

I believe the Holy Spirit didn't spell it out so one would have to dig in for themselves. If Paul didn't know the exact dates of each event mentioned, and scripture didn't spell it all out, the "abouts" is all we're going to get. With all the dates presented here stopping and starting in January, one must keep in mind that some events happen in quick secession and others take time to change. This "wiggle room" is a given, even in scripture, hence the usage of "about".

Though you may not agree with the individual judge times, or the length of the reign of Saul, to have all these verses agree shows that this scenario is very close to actual events. So now you understand why I chose to count from Joshua's 5th year (they rested from war - Acts 13:19 and Joshua 14:10) to the fourth year of Solomon. I believe I Kings 6:1 that it was 480 years, because it was, exactly, not "about". After resting in the land from war, Creation Year 2498, to Solomon's fourth year of reign, Creation Year 2978, equals 480 years exactly.

Be careful with the counts. The Exodus, the wanderings, the war, the judges, Samuel, Saul up to David come to 481 years (CY 2453 to CY 2934). Remember, Eli died when the ark was taken, stayed for 7 months with the Philistines, was returned to Kirjathjearim and stayed there 20 years until David was made king and he took it out. All the years of Saul it was neglected. So from the death of Eli to David's first year was 20 years. I Kings 6:1 speaks from "out of the land of Egypt" it isn't counting the years of wandering and the 5 years to war for the land with Joshua because from Joshua, all the judges, to Solomon's fourth year is exactly 480 years (CY 2498 to CY 2978). From the day of the Exodus to the fourth year of Solomon is 525 years (CY 2453 to CY 2978). Scripture counts two ways: one from Exodus to Eli; the second from the end of the Joshua's wars to Solomon's fourth year, Joshua 14:10, I Kings 6:1.

Here's the breakdown:

Exodus CY 2453 to Joshua's fifth year CY 2498 (not counted): 45 years
Joshua's fifth year CY 2498 to Eli's death: CY 2913:  415 years
CY 2914: 7 months with the Philistines, 20 years in Kirjathjearim: CY 2934: 20 Years + 7 months
David made king and rules 40 years: CY 2934 to CY 2974: 40 Years
Solomon made king CY 2975 to fourth year 2978: 4 Years

415 + 20 + 40 + 4 + 7 months = 479 years 7 months, from the rest from war and wandering CY 2498 to Solomon's fourth year, CY 2978. Scripture does not provide enough information to fill in the missing four months. Four unspecified months spread over 480 years does not constitute a contradiction. So, what do you know, Scripture is correct, 480 years.

Solomon's Fourth Year  - CY 2978

Creation Year: 2978  Western Year: 999 BC

480 years from resting from the wars under Joshua to this year, Creation Year 2498, after the fifth year of Joshua, that year they rested from the wars, I Kings 6:1, Joshua 14:10. Solomon starts to build the temple of God in the second month, which is Iyyar (or Ziv or Zif), I Kings 6:37-38.

Temple is completed  - CY 2985

Creation Year: 2985  Western Year: 992 BC

The temple is completed in the month Bul, which is Heshvan, the eighth month, I Kings 6:38.

Temple is dedicated  - CY 2986

Creation Year: 2986  Western Year: 991 BC

Solomon calls all the elders of Israel, etc., and they meet on the 9th of Tishri and celebrate the great Day of Atonement on the 10th, then Solomon dedicates the house of God on the Feast of Tabernacles, on the 15th of Tishri, the seventh month, I Kings 8:1-2. The first seven days were occupied with the dedication (9th - 15th), and the other seven devoted to the Feast of Tabernacles on the 15th, (15th-22nd) and were told they could go on until the 23rd, I Kings 8:65-66, II Chronicles 7:9-10.

End of day three  - CY 3001

Creation Year: 3001  Western Year: 976 BC

End of day three, beginning of day four, II Peter 3:8.

Jeroboam King of Israel, Rehoboam King of Judah - CY 3014

Creation Year: 3014  Western Year: 963 BC

Jeroboam reigned 22 years, I Kings 14:20. Rehoboam was 41 years old and reigned 17 years, I Kings 14:21.

Understanding...- CY 3014

These secular kings mentioned here have their year of accession added. The Jewish kings had no accession years added to their years, usually. This is very important to remember. This is seen much better in an Excel spreadsheet. The Talmud InfoInformationA collection of Oral tradition, written down states too in Yoma, fol. 38, col. 2,

If a king be crowned on the twenty-ninth of Adar (the last month of the sacred year), on the morrow--the first of Nissan--it is reckoned that he commences his second year, that being the new year's day for royal and ecclesiastical affairs.

Egypt takes treasures...  - CY 3018

Creation Year: 3018  Western Year: 959 BC

King Shishak of Egypt came and took the treasures of the Temple, I Kings 14:25.

Abijah King of Judah  - CY 3031

Creation Year: 3031  Western Year: 946 BC

**Abijam (Abijah) reigned 3 years, King of Judah, had 14 wives, 22 sons, 16 daughters, I Kings 15:1, II Chronicles 13:21. ** Reheboam must of died just before his end of the year for Ajijah to have started to reign in Jeroboam's 18th year or some event took place that's not recorded as to why it wasn't immediate in his 17th year, I Kings 14:25.

500,000 die in one battle  - CY 3032

Creation Year: 3032  Western Year: 945 BC

500,000 men of Israel died in a single battle with Abijah, II Chronicles 13:17.

Asa King of Judah  - CY 3033

Creation Year: 3033  Western Year: 944 BC

Asa reigned 41 years 20th year of Jeroboam.

The Jews didn't count accession years. No explanation for this count of the year, but if 2818 was the second year of Asa then Nadab would have taken the throne while Jeroboam was still king. Something not impossible, but changing this affects other scripture references below, I Kings 15:9.

Nadab King of Israel  - CY 3035

Creation Year: 3035  Western Year: 942 BC

Nadab (reigned 2 years) second year of Asa, I Kings 15:25.

Baasha King of Israel  - CY 3036

Creation Year: 3036  Western Year: 941 BC

Baasha killed Nadab and all the house of Jeroboam (reigned 24 years) third year of Asa, I Kings 15:28, I Kings 15:33. Jehu the prophet told Baasha he was evil and would end up like Jeroboam, I Kings 16:1-7. Jeroboam died in the second year of Asa; Nadab ruled 2 years; Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa, yet Nadab ruled 2 years. The difference is that all events are shown from January to January instead of the more plausible May to Aug, etc.

Elah King of Israel  - CY 3059

Creation Year: 3059  Western Year: 918 BC

Elah reigned 2 years the 26th year of Asa, I Kings 16:8.

Zimri King of Israel (7 days)  - CY 3060

Creation Year: 3060  Western Year: 917 BC

Zimri ruled 7 days and was killed, in the 27th year of Asa, I Kings 16:15-20.

Omri King of Israel  - CY 3060

Creation Year: 3060  Western Year: 917 BC

Omri reigned 12 years the 27th year of Asa, but fought with Tibni for 3 years as co-King, I Kings 16:21-23.

Tibni co-King of Israel  - CY 3061

Creation Year: 3061  Western Year: 916 BC

Tibni and Omri fought and Israel was split between them in a battle. Omri reigned 12 years the 27th year of Asa, but fought with Tibni for 3 years as co-King, I Kings 16:21-23.

Omri sole ruler of Israel  - CY 3064

Creation Year: 3064  Western Year: 913 BC

Omri (ruler alone in Israel) reigned 12 years (6 years in Tirzah after taking it) Omri was worse than all before him, I Kings 16:23.

Ahab King of Israel  - CY 3071

Creation Year: 3071  Western Year: 906 BC

Ahab reigned 22 years, worse even still than all before him and he rebuilt Jericho as prophesied according to Joshua, Joshua 6:26, I Kings 16:29.

Jehoshaphat King of Judah  - CY 3074

Creation Year: 3074  Western Year: 903 BC

Jehoshaphat 35 years old, ruled 25 years in fourth year of Ahab, I Kings 22:41-42.

Ahaziah King of Israel (co-regent)  - CY 3091

Creation Year: 3091  Western Year: 886 BC

Ahaziah (in the 17th year of Jehoshaphat) ruled 2 years co-regent, I Kings 22:51.

Jehoram King of Israel  - CY 3092

Creation Year: 3092  Western Year: 885 BC

Jehoram (18th year of Jehoshaphat) son of Ahab ruled because Ahaziah had no sons. Also called Joram, 32 years old ruled 12 years, II Kings 3:1, This is the 22nd year of Ahab and second year of Ahaziah co-reigning at this time.

Jehoram King of Judah (co-regent)  - CY 3096

Creation Year: 3096  Western Year: 881 BC

Because his father was illness in his bowels, he co-reigned until his father died 2 years later, II Chronicles 21:9-20. Jehoram, co-reigned with his father 32 years old ruled 8 years in 5th year Joram, II Kings 8:16. Jehoram a terrible king, killed all his house but the Lord would not kill him without child for the promise God kept to David. He was the only king not buried in David's sepulcher.

Ahaziah King of Judah  - CY 3102

Creation Year: 3102  Western Year: 875 BC

Eleventh year of Joram and began to rule as co-regent, Ahaziah ruled with his ill father, son-in-law of Ahab's house and his mother was daughter of Omri, II Kings 9:20-29. He ruled one year in Jerusalem, was caught in Samaria the next year, II Kings 8:25-26.

Jehu King of Israel, Ahaziah, King of Judah, and Athaliah Queen of Judah - CY 3103

Creation Year: 3103  Western Year: 874 BC

Jehu ruled 28 years after killing Ahab's 70 sons, including Joram and Ahaziah his son, II Chronicles 22:7-12, II Kings 9:21-27. Because Jehu the prophet did kill them God promised his family would rule up to four generations, but he served Baal instead! The only woman ruler of Judah, daughter of Omri King of Israel, killed everyone but one. She ruled six years, II Kings 11:1-3, II Chronicles 22:10-12.

Note: No matter the problems of years before this year, and you are skeptical that this chronology is correct, everything is reset here because Jehu killed both the King of Israel and Judah. Athaliah, Queen of Israel, ruled in her son's stead.

Joash King of Judah  - CY 3109

Creation Year: 3109  Western Year: 868 BC

Joash (Jehoash) ruled in the 7th year after the death of Athaliah by Jehoiada, 7 years old and ruled 40 years, 7th year of Jehu, II Kings 11:4, II Kings 11:21, II Kings 12:1, II Chronicles 24:1.

Jehoahaz King of Israel  - CY 3131

Creation Year: 3131  Western Year: 846 BC

Jehoahaz ruled 17 years in the 23rd year of Joash, II Kings 13:1. In addition, the priests hadn't obeyed Jehoash's command to fix the breaches of the Temple by this time, II Kings 12:6.

Jehoash King of Israel  - CY 3145

Creation Year: 3145  Western Year: 832 BC

Jehoash, King of Israel, also called Joash, ruled 16 years starting in the 37th year of Joash, King of Judah, II Kings 14:1 and was co-regent with his father Jehoahaz king of Israel, II Kings 13:10.

Amaziah King of Judah  - CY 3146

Creation Year: 3146  Western Year: 831BC

Amaziah 25 years old, ruled 29 years starting in the 2nd year of Jehoash. Joash was ill and Amaziah was co-regent, II Kings 14:1, II Chronicles 24:25, II Chronicles 25:1.

Jeroboam (II) King of Israel  - CY 3160

Creation Year: 3160  Western Year: 817 BC

Jeroboam II, in the 15th year of Amaziah and ruled 40 years, II Kings 14:23. Amaziah lived 15 years after the death of Jehoash (Joash), II Kings 14:17, II Chronicles 25:25.

Azariah King of Judah  - CY 3175

Creation Year: 3175  Western Year: 802 BC

Jeroboam II, (27th year, II Kings 15:1, 11 as co-regent, 16th of solo reign) I believe this instead of an interregnum for Israel because if Azariah was too young as some claim, why didn't he start when he was 8 years old as Josiah did? The answer, Jeroboam was consort with his father. Also to put an interregnum in Israel would have made the interregnum for Judah after Jeroboam 22 years instead of 11, which is still an amazing length of time. The problem is that scripture doesn't provide the age of Zachariah when he took the throne. Azariah (Uzziah) being 16 years old, ruled 52 years, II Kings 14:21. This is the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam's partnership in the kingdom with his father, who made him consort at his going to the Syrian wars. It is the sixteenth year of Jeroboam's sole monarchy, II Kings 15:1.

Earthquake- CY 3178*

Sometime in both kings' reign, Amos says there was an earthquake, Amos 1:1, Zechariah 14:5, which as Josephus writes, was when Uzziah would have usurped the priest's office, and therefore was smitten with leprosy, [Josephus - Antiquities, 9:10.4].

Interregnum of Israel  - CY 3206

Creation Year: 3206  Western Year: 771 BC

Interregnum is a period when normal government is suspended, esp. between successive reigns or regimes.

Power struggle in Israel. No mention in scripture how long this went on, except II Kings 15:8-17 when three kings reigned over a period of 7 months, before Zachariah becomes king starting in the 38th year of Azariah, II Kings 15:8-17.

Zachariah King of Israel  - CY 3212

Creation Year: 3212  Western Year: 765 BC

Zachariah (reigned only 6 months) in the 38th year of Azariah, II Kings 15:8. The father of Abi, who was the mother of Hezekiah (II Kings 18:2).

Shallum, King of Israel and Menahem, King of Israel  - CY 3213

Creation Year: 3213  Western Year: 764 BC

Shallum (reigned only 1 month) Menahem ruled 10 years starting in the 39th year of Azariah, II Kings 15:13, 17. Pul (or Tiglath-pileser?) king of Assyria lived during this time II Kings 15:19.

Note: This is a perfect example where the counting of one's reign must be explained. To say that Menahem reigned 10 years might mean that he reigned 9.5 years to 10.5 years in one convention or it might even mean that he reigned 10 to 10.9 years in another convention. Similarly, the 39th year of Azariah might mean that Azariah had been reigning for slightly more than 38 years to slightly less than 39.0 years - at least this is how we would normally interpret the English (the first year being from 0 to 1, etc.) and perhaps this is also true of the Hebrew. Similarly, the 50th year of Azariah might mean that he had been reigning between 49 and 50 years. Therefore, we can say that 38.9 + 10.5 = 49.4 which is the 50th year. This problem is unavoidable with digital/approximate information and this is perhaps compounded by the fact that the spreadsheet is digital. For example, the events between different rows on the spreadsheet would normally be taken to be spaced one year apart but in some cases (such as when a son takes over from his father) the events may only be one day apart but they nevertheless will occur is separate rows.

Pekahiah King of Israel  - CY 3224

Creation Year: 3224  Western Year: 753 BC

Pekahiah ruled 2 years in the 50th year of Azariah, II Kings 15:23.

Pekah King of Israel  - CY 3226

Creation Year: 3226  Western Year: 751 BC

Pekah ruled 20 year in the 52nd year of Azariah, II Kings 15:27.

II Kings 15:29 says Tiglathpileser king of Assyria came and took seven cities and all Naphtali to Assyria - the start of the various exoduses. Pekah killed 120,000 in one day and took 200,000 back to Samaria, II Chronicles 28:6, and Oded the prophet told him to send them home, so he did. Isaiah foretells the destruction of Ephraim, Isaiah 7:1, fulfilled 62 years later when Esarhaddon King of Assur put people in Israel instead of the Jews Ezra 4:2. Josephus says this came 140 years before the destruction of the Temple, Book 11, Chap 1, para 2 (6 years off, but then Josephus is wrong about a lot of numbers - compare scripture account of the returning people from Babylon and his numbers.)

Jotham King of Judah  - CY 3227

Creation Year: 3227  Western Year: 750 BC

Jotham, second year of Peka, 25 years old, ruled 16 years, II Kings 15:32-33.

Interregnum of Israel  - CY 3246

Creation Year: 3246  Western Year: 731 BC

Hoshea plotted against Peka and killed him, but didn't have the support to reign just yet, II Kings 15:30, (20th year of since Jotham's reign), II Kings 15:30.

Interregnum HelpDefinitionA period when normal government is suspended, esp. between successive reigns or regimes. of Israel, due to lack of support as authority as king. This must be so because Peka ruled only 20 years and Hoshea killed him yet didn't (or couldn't) take the throne until Ahaz's 12th year.

Hoshea King of Israel  - CY 3253

Creation Year: 3253  Western Year: 724 BC

Hoshea gained the support and reigned 12th year of Ahaz, ruled 9 years, II Kings 17:1.

Hezekiah King of Judah  - CY 3255

Creation Year: 3255  Western Year: 722BC

II Kings 18:1 must have been at the very end of his 3rd year, Hezekiah co-regent ruled 29 years at 25 years old in the third year of Hoshea, II Chronicles 29:1. Hezekiah had the priests cleanse the house of the Lord the 1st of Nisan and finished on the 16th having sanctified the Temple in his first year, II Chronicles 29:3.

Creation Year: 3259  Western Year: 718 BC

II Kings 17:1-6 says Shalmaneser made Hoshea servant because he had conspired with the king of Egypt. II Kings 18:9-16 says Shalmaneser king of Assyria besieged Sameria for three years in the fourth year of Hezekiah which was the seventh year of Hoshea.

No more kings of Israel  - CY 3261

Creation Year: 3261  Western Year: 716 BC

II Kings 18:10 says at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

The last of Israel was all taken to Assyria. This is were history says is the last entry of the "Lost Tribes of Israel."

No more kings of Israel until Jesus the Christ's arrival at the appointed time!

When Hezekiah calls Israel to join Judah in Jerusalem for the Passover, they came, but the priests were not ready so they kept the Passover in the 2nd month instead of Nisan, II Chronicles chapter 30, because there were too few priests, of the remnant of Israel they should come, II Chronicles 30:6, II Kings 15:29.

Sennacherib attacks...  - CY 3269

Creation Year: 3269  Western Year: 708 BC

Tirhakah king of Ethiopia ruled during this time, II Kings 19:9. Sennacherib came and took many cities of Judah in the 14th year of Hezekiah, II Kings 18:13-15, Isaiah 36:1. Judah was in doom of that of Israel, but Hezekiah asked the king of Assyria how much not to destroy them. Then Hezekiah gave him all the silver of the house of the Lord and cut off the gold from the Temple doors or pay him, II Kings 18:13-15, Isaiah 36:1.

Sabbatical Year  - CY 3270

Creation Year: 3270  Western Year: 707 BC

This year was a Sabbatical YearHelpDefinitionA Sabbatical Year is a full year where planting is not allowed so as to give the land rest..

II Kings 19 and 20 have three very important issues: God did not wish the line of kings to continue but for Hezekiah's cry, God gave him 15 more years. This was also when the sun went back ten degrees as a sign Hezekiah would be healed. The third is that God wishes the best for man, but just as a human father would, relented and changed His wishes. The consequent of this was the birth of the worst king in Judah's history - Manasseh. It was because of the continued evil of Manasseh that God allowed them to be carried away to Babylon. The King of Assyria said he'd destroy Jerusalem. Hezekiah ran to the Lord and Isaiah said God would defend Jerusalem for His sake, and killed 185,000 men of Assyria with an angel. II Kings 19:35-37, Isaiah 37:36-38. Sennacherib king of Assyria then left to go home and was murdered by his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer and they escaped to Armenia and Esarhaddon his son reigned. The army was destroyed 14 Nisan (During Passover).

It is at the end of this "sign" time that I believe that the angel of the Lord killed the 185,000 men of war on 14 Nisan, Passover of Hezekiah's 15th year. The 15th year was the year of the sun going back ten degrees and the year Hezekiah was healed by God of whatever fatal boil he had (cured by a fig paste), on the 13th of Nisan.

Note: See Appendix D for more information. I won't get into here too much, but there is an extensive site that is attempting to take in all historical worldwide legends and myths concerning cosmologyHelpDefinitionThe science of the origin and development of the universe.. We know from scripture that the length of a year used to be 360 days. What caused the change? Any right thinker could easily understand that the earth was made with a 360-day orbit around the sun with 30-day months of twelve in number; seems more "pure" than 365.2524 days around the sun. What scripture provides as an explanation (Joshua's long day, and Hezekiah's roll back) is not enough for the novice or professional cosmologist. Since it is next to impossible to prove anything without modern scientific methodology of ancient history, scientists simple dismiss and ignore written history that does not fit their current dogma. As a result, they have skewed data and created incorrect assumptions. What I'm getting at is that there is enough non-biblical evidence which helps to explain a lot of the events in Scripture. To the student of Scripture, extra biblical ideas can assist in silencing the critics concerning false contradictions. I am not advocating the site as authentic, simply compelling; a place to help provoke the imagination through the filter of the Holy Spirit. The site is not Christian based but is fully referenced. Here is a statement about the site by the author:

This is a cosmology. It is not the traditional handed-down narrative passed off as the history of everything. It is an alternative, but it is very extensive, quite complete, and more than accurate. My method has been to develop, in turn, a chronology, the celestial mechanics, collect myths and iconography, and then turn to a narrative. As an alternative cosmology it has remained within the accepted boundaries of physics and dating. This has continued to surprise me as the details developed. I have had no problem with the integration of the iconography, the odd events, and the obscure mythological phrasings, where other alternative cosmologies have had to resort to analogical and metaphorical readings of the past, or suggest improbable exploding bolides.
